Do You Know Who You Are?

by Amanda Neis-Berger

As you lay in bed at night trying to fall asleep do you ever imagine yourself as someone else? Is there a superhero or celebrity that you find yourself trying to imitate?

The scripture tells us exactly who we are and whose image we were created in…….God.

I know that may be hard to believe, especially about those who make our lives miserable, but it’s true. Each of us were created in God’s image. Genesis 1:27-31 shares the following, “So God created man in his own image; he created him in the image of God; he created them male and female. God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth.” God also said, “Look, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the surface of the entire earth and every tree whose fruit contains seed. This will be food for you, for all wildlife of the earth, for every bird of the sky, and for every creature that crawls on the earth – everything having the breath of life in it – I have given green plant for food.” And it was so. God saw all that he had made, and it was very good indeed.”

If we begin in verse 27 we see that all male and females are created to be image bearers of God. Does this mean we are equal to God? No, of course not, but it does mean we have been created to display some of the attributes of God. Three ways in which we were created in His image are being personal, emotional and creative.

1)     We are created as personal beings. If we are honest with ourselves, we each have a deep longing to be with our friends and loved ones. We spend hours talking to them and getting to know all of their likes and dislikes. When we read deeper into the creation account we find that God formed Adam with his very fingers and breathed life into his body. A few verses later we see God created Eve as a helper for Adam. While Adam and Eve were each created differently and for different purposes, they each were so important to God that he formed them himself and knew them intimately. In this same way, God has created each of us and we each carry the same importance to Him.

2)     We are created to be emotional. God is love and each of us have been made to love. This emotion allows us to form friendships, respect and obey our parents and care deeply for those around us. Out of love forms emotions such as compassion and empathy that creates the longing to help those around us.

3)     We are created to be creative. Can you imagine the creativity it must have taken to create all the animals that roam this Earth? Or the creativity it took to create the human body with all of its functions that work perfectly together? Just the same, we long to create art masterpieces or develop new computer code that will be the next big app. We long to decorate our rooms or perfect our style to fit our personality.

How would you live your life differently if you approached every person you meet or know as someone who has been created in the Image of God? Would you still discount those who are different than you? Would you hold a grudge against the friend who treated you badly? Would you ignore the rules provided by your parents? Let us glorify God by loving those around us, personally getting to know those who God sets in our path, and accepting ourselves and others as image-bearers of the Lord Almighty.
